Foam Screed is Done
Aug 9
A quick run through the house after 6cm of PUR foam screed has been sprayed over the concrete support floor, covering the electricity, water and drain pipes. This will be an insulation base for the floor heating.

thanks steve i see …
thanks steve i see what youve done i dont think build regs would allow this system in england as u values could not be ured with a hand laid pu insulation. however if it is only used to cover services i can see how it beats cutting out loads of insulation board. however most of our projects keep all this in the soffit. Cheers very interesting…
My floor is built …
My floor is built up in the following layers:
1. reinforced concrete floor base
2. on top of this I laid all my drain pipes, water supply pipes, electric wires, etc
3. Then the foam screed (60mm) was sprayed on to cover all these pipes, provide insulation and a relatively flat surface.
4. On top of this I laid the floor heating circuits
5. Then 50mm sand/cement screed enveloping the floor heating pipes
6. finaly will come the floor covering (tiles, stone, laminate, etc)
It is Polyurethane …
It is Polyurethane (PUR) Spray insulation. It is sprayed as a mix of two chemicals which foam and harden into the PUR insulation.
It is not flat enough to lay a floor covering directly over it, but is an insulation UNDERNEATH my floar-heating. Over the foam I laid out the warm water pipes of the floor heating circuits, and bedded them in a 50mm sand/cement screed. The foam prevents heat transfer downwards, while the dense screed above makes for a good heat dispertion upwards.
dear Self Build …
dear Self Build Steve,
I may sound a bit daft but what is foam screed is it pumped and how can you lay a floor covering on that as it is not exactly flat? If you then screed with a sand and cement surely this extra cost must make this overly expensive. Also encapsulating the pipe in foam will not allow the best heat transfer as if the pipe was encapsulated in a dense thin 35-40mm flowscreed?
