My doberman won’t leave his ears posted… HELP!!!?
I recently got my dobie’s ears cropped. My fiance and I were indecisive about getting it done, and now I wish we hadn’t, so please don’t give me any lectures about it being cruel or wrong, what is done is done and now I need help. The vet has tried several times and we have tried several times to post the dog’s ears. The posting will stay in place for a few hours and then the dog manages to get the post out of his ear. We have one of the cone shaped collars on him in an effort to keep him from ripping the whole contraption off his head.
We have tried using pipe foam, as this was what the vet used/suggested but it hasn’t worked too well.
We have tried figure eight around his head with a chin strap, the stuff will stay on his head but the actual post always pops out of his ear, even though it is still taped to the ear. We push it down as deep as possible into his ear but it still pops out.
Has anyone used the adhesive glue painted on the inside of the ear with pipe insulation or moleskin? Or does anyone else have any ideas?
When my aunt had her Boxer’s ears done, this may sound wierd, but she used a tampon to hold the ear in place then use athletes tape to wrap the ears and connected them at the top of the dog’s head.
There is this special type of liquid that melts the glue from the athletes tape but im not sure what it’s called.

it is cruel. it was wrong. and now your dogs in pain.
anyone with half a brain would take him back to the vet so he can be treated with the respect he deserves.

I do not agree with this procedure but I wouldn’t suggest putting any type of glue on your dogs ears. This may cause infection. Don’t put anything into the dogs ear as this will just cause more discomfort. I believe the doctor would have told you this procedure is not guaranteed, there is a reason for that.

Ah, I have just the website to help you. I was given this website’s url during a vet conference about medical care for show dogs.
Good luck!
Add: I’d like to mention that even though I do not endorse ear cropping, what’s done is done. Telling this person that she did a bad thing to her dog will not help in the least bit. What we can do is help her finish what was started and make her dog feel better =]

Do you think maybe your dog is beginning to feel like you are messing with his ears unnecessarily?
Dogs are pretty smart animals, try asking your dog what would be best, and go with that. They are his ears, after all — what’s left of them.

I have a lot of friends who are dogs.
You’ll find plenty of sites and even some videos on taping the ears online. I looked up "taping a dobermans ears" and picked one at random. It has the tampon method that was mentioned by another poster. http://www.dpca.org/BreedEd/ears1.htm
I know how some people feel it’s cruel and wrong, but in my opinion, some breeds just don’t look right with floppy ears when they’re supposed to be cropped. So don’t let alone make you feel bad about having it done.
I would suggest contacting someone through the link listed above. It’s for the Doberman breed club and they should be able to advise you better.

Why didn’t you just leave them alone to begin with. I certainly wish that the United States would make it illegal to crop like over in the U.K. Just leave the ears how they are. I sure wouldn’t put any glue or other such thing in my dog’s ears. To me, this is a form of cruelty. Leave alone whatever is left of the poor dog’s ears. They are what they’ve going to be. Poor thing must be miserable with you messing with his ears, plus having to wear an e-collar.

i would go to a different vet for a second opinion.

Its unusual for a dog to bother posted ears at all. Chances are you aren’t posting correctly and the posting is moving around irratating the dog causing him to pull it down. If the posts are "popping out of his ear" then you don’t have them in frimly enough. The most common post is tampons or popcicle sticks covered in medical tape. Either one should be firmly in the ear. If they are in correctly they will not pop out. The other method you are refering to uses skin adhesive not actual glue and while I have not used it is is considered an effective method and if your dog is activly pulling down the post and they are not just popping out on their own or you are to tentatave about putting the posts into the ear properly then this may be the best method for you. You can find a good number of ear posting methods here http://www.dpca.org/BreedEd/ears1.htm just click next at the bottom of the page to go through them.
There is nothing cruel about cropping and/or posting as some have suggested. Don’t "just leave his ears alone" as some have suggested. A flopped crop looks riduculus and ruins a dogs appearnce. You chose to crop (should have been done by the breeder anyway) so you need to commit to it now and post until the ears stand properly

Tampons with athletic tape, wrapped around ear work wonders…….
See the website below….it is precisely how I taped my dogs ears only with tampons except I put more tape around the finished ears than the 2 little pieces in the last picture.
