Can rigid foam insulation be installed in basements underneath or before strapping?

I saw on HGTV, Holmes on homes, they insulated the basement walls and floor. But I noticed that it hadn’t been strapped or studded yet. They glued the panels on and taped all corners and seams. It looked like a good way to seal the area. But how would you strap and drywall that? You cant just glue and screw the strapping to the 2” foam can you?

Glue insulation to the wall, tape/foam the seams. You can then stud the wall in front of the foam, or attach furring strips to the walls (through the foam) with a power actuated gun, then attach the drywall. Foam is a perfectly efficient way to insulate and air seal the basement walls.

how much does a sheet of rigid insulation foam weigh?

  1. youd have to build a stud wall up against the foam then drywall that

  3. They probably had the bottom plate and top plate of the wall secured to the floor and ceiling joists.

  4. I have used the foam and I learned the hard way, that it is heck getting that stuff off. When I sprayed around the door frame, it foamed out, of course. I thought was to let it dry then just scrape it off. Well, its not that easy. I ended up having to use a dry wall saw! Trust me, get all the overflow off while wet.

  5. the easyest way is to put the foam board first then rent a T nailer to shoot the furring strips up

  6. The framing would rest on the foam, with tapcons going through the plate and into the cement, then just continue framing up from there. The walls would be studded out against the block with tapcons going into the block after which your drywall would just screw to your framing.
